Attachment & Relational Trauma

The patterns we learned before we had words

How close is safe, what happens when someone is disappointed in you, whether your needs are allowed to take up room — most of that was settled long before you could think about it.

You might recognise some of this

  • You say yes when you mean no, and notice only afterwards
  • Conflict feels genuinely dangerous, not merely unpleasant
  • You manage other people’s feelings before your own register
  • Closeness makes you want to withdraw; distance makes you ache
  • The same argument, with different people, for years
  • Boundaries feel like cruelty when you try to set them
  • You function well at work and struggle most where it matters most

These aren’t character flaws. They’re strategies — ones that kept you safe once, and have outlived the situation that required them.

How this work goes

Relational patterns live in the body before they live in language. The flinch, the held breath, the reflex to smooth things over — these move faster than thought, which is why insight alone so rarely changes them.

An attuned therapeutic relationship is the vehicle here. Much of the repair happens in what takes place between us: noticing what your body does in real time, and having a different outcome than the one it expects.

Connection is medicine.

Many people live full and effective professional lives and still find their relationships to self, to others, or to the world fraught with struggle. That gap is workable.
